Cutting an onion releases a fine spray of droplets. Freezing:
Cold onion react slower when cut, keep cold onion for at least 30 minutes before chopping & peeling or try freezing for about 10 to 15 minutes before slicing into it.
Under Water:
Try to chop the onions with a very sharp, stainless steel knife under water before starting to slice. The water will help engross the sulfur compounds and a sharp knife will make a cleaner cut, staining the onion cells less which hypothetically means causing less reaction.
Use a Candle:
Light a candle near the cutting board or light a burner. Cut onions as close to flame as possible without danger of being burned. The heat will lure the sulfur to it and away from your eyes.
Slice Of Bread:
If you put a piece of bread with your mouth, the bread absorbs the gases and averts them from making it up to your eyes. It is used by different people and is confirmed to be effective.
Use Gum:
Gum emboldens you to breathe through your mouth and, in so doing, gasp the gases before they reach your eyes. They won’t destroy your esophagus, it’s a safe way.
